Parenting Class List

Childbirth and Parenting Services offers programs to support pregnant women, new mothers, new fathers, siblings and parents.

There are a wide range of classes and workshops to meet your needs. The Childbirth and Parenting Services include Prenatal Instructors who are registered nurses with a special expertise in prenatal and postnatal care.

For our Pre-Admission form and information on what to bring with giving birth please see the Family Birthing Centre.

All of our programs are open to everyone, whether they are having their baby at St. Joseph’s Health Centre or not.

Please register 4 weeks prior to Start Date of the course you wish to attend. Spaces fill up quickly!

VBAC Workshop

Description

VBAC Workshop (Vaginal Birth After Caesarian Section)
This is an information session that will facilitate decision making, as to whether VBAC is the right choice for you. The decision to have a VBAC should be made in conjunction with your health Care provider.

Childbirth Preparation Classes (5 week course)

Description

This 5 week course will help prepare you for labour and birth and the postnatal period. Through active participation and group discussion, breastfeeding, the normal newborn will be discussed. Various labour coping techniques (breathing and relaxation) will be demonstrated. A tour of our Family Birthing Centre is included. Classes run one night per week for 5 consecutive weeks.

Class Options

  • Monday – 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday – 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (series number ending with ‘A’)
  • Tuesday – 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. (series number ending with ‘B’)
  • Wednesday – 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Thursday – 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Prenatal Classes - Mini Series (9am - 2:30pm)

Description

We have condensed elements from our regular six-class series in order to accommodate those women who are unable to commit to a full six-week evening program. This mini-series focuses on birthing, and includes a video on birth and a tour of our Family Birthing Centre. Other topics touched on include new mother and baby care, as well as practical demonstrations of breathing and relaxation techniques. We strongly recommend the Breastfeeding for Baby and Newborn Care Workshops outlined below.

Breastfeeding for Baby

Description

The information you need to make an informed choice about how to feed your baby. Each class is from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This program is recommended only for parents enrolled in the Mini Series (see above).

Discussions include:

  • The importance of breastfeeding
  • The unique qualities of breastmilk
  • Understanding how breastmilk is made
  • Getting off to a good start: The first week
  • Getting a latch that works for mom and baby
  • How to know baby is thriving on breastmilk
  • Avoiding and overcoming common challenges
  • When and where to get help
  • Support from others who value breastfeeding: Dads, grandparents and friends

Prenatal Newborn Care Workshop

Description

This 2 1/2 hour workshop will teach you about:

  • Baby’s first weeks
  • Getting to know your baby
  • Soothing a crying baby
  • Baby safety
  • Sleep and SIDS
  • Where to get help
  • Resources

Saturday workshops run from 9 AM to 11:30 AM. Evening programs run from 6 PM to 8:30 PM.

New Mothers Group

For first time mothers with babies 6 weeks to 3 months of age. This is an opportunity for mothers to connect with other new mothers and discuss newborn issues. This class will be facilitated by a registered nurse. The class runs from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Free Dad's-Only Workshop

Description

This is an informal class, facilitated by a “Dad”. It is an information session that will give dad’s an opportunity to talk to other fathers about how to prepare for the birth of the baby and helpful tips to ease the transition of the new baby to the family.
